Micro die grinders are compact pneumatic rotary tools designed for precision grinding, shaping, carving, engraving, polishing, and material removal. Their small size allows excellent control in confined spaces and on intricate workpieces where larger tools would be difficult to use.

In fossil preparation, micro die grinders are commonly used for reducing hard matrix, matrix smoothing and finishing, shaping stone, cleaning plaster jackets, removing old repairs (e.g. glue lines), carving reconstructions such as epoxy putty and preparing specimens prior to final detailing with air scribes or abrasive units. When fitted with diamond burs, they are particularly effective on hard limestones, sandstones, and other resistant matrices.

The high rotational speed and compact design make a micro die grinder an extremely versatile addition to any workshop, offering rapid material removal while maintaining excellent control over delicate or detailed work. A pneumatic grinder provides more torque and higher speeds than an electric rotary tool.

Grinders remove material by abrasion rather than impact.
